The back piece is aluminum with contemplative sayings etched into the metal. The next layer is an etched and pierced aluminum leaf mounted about 1/2" above the background. The final layer is 4 enameled squares depicting the colors of the leaf in each of the 4 seasons, starting at 1:00 and going counterclockwise: Spring, summer, fall and winter.

Very interesting techniques Teresa - how did you attach the 2nd layer leaf - and how are the 4 enamel squares separate and attached?

The 4 enameled squares and the 2nd layer are attached by the same long, steel pegs. They go through the leaf layer and the enameled squares are mounted to the heads of the steel pegs. I cut sleeves out of brass that slide over the steel pegs for the leaf to sit on top of, then the whole top part goes down over and through the lower section and is glued into the wooden base. It has a hanger on the back for wall mounting.
