  I studied granulation many years back at Jewelry Arts in New York and Cecilia Bauer studio. We only used fine silver balls and fine silver sheet- when we used gold balls they  had to be placed in sparex with a steel wire to cause the copper to coat the gold beads. Fine silver works so much easier than the sterling silver. You just need to attach them with some Hyde glue mixed with water and position them in place and dry, then apply your torch. I will have to go back into my notes to post the specific recipe for the glue and water. But there is little or no extra work to using fine silver as you do with sterling silver. Why use it?

    Christina L Hi Trish, is purchasing fine silver sheet more expensive the sterling silver sheet? Lillian Jones uses fine silver granulation and fine silver sheet in her work. I am just wondering if its okay to use fins silver granules on sterling silver sheet?

  I have been doing alot of research on granulation, I will write some of the formulas from different sources for all to share.  Has anyone in this group had success with the process?  I haven't tried the formulas yet, I've only experimented with placing sterling balls I've made onto sterling jerwelery I have created.  I didn't get perfect results. I purchased the hyde glue and one source stated putting the balls into an copper plumbing cap will coat them with enough copper to make the eutectic bond take place.  Use  one part hyde glueto  ten parts water to make the glue.  1 heaping part copper hydroxide, 2 to 5 parts diluted hide glue. plus 2 to 3 drops of high temperature lliquid flux.  * for silver, the copper hydroxide must be at least 65 to 85 percent pure, but compounds with a higher lpurity will also work. Clean metal carefully, place the balls with hyde glue onto surface, wick off excess liquid ( balls will move around.)Put the copper hydroxide on top of the granules before the hyde glue dries.  Wick up any moisture from around granules, the mixture will cause discoloration.  Set aside and let the piece dry slowly.  Place on top of kiln to dry faster, but don't use a torch because the granules will move.   When completely dry use a torch with a bushy flame only,heating gently and slowly. This is what keeps the balls in place.   it is a slow and tedious process and the balls will shimmer and looks watery when they bond. Don't be too agressive with the torch  because you could melt the balls and wreck your  hard work.  After this let the balls cool down and test them with a tweezer so see if they are attached.  If some are loose start over and wait for the shimmer and hope it works.
